Dan Abramov is between things

After Meta and Bluesky, Dan Abramov is taking a break, watching his field change, and opening up a few hours of consulting.

In brief

After Meta and Bluesky, Dan Abramov is taking a break, watching his field change, and opening up a few hours of consulting. You can admit you don't know what's next and still offer the thing you're good at right now. Originally reported by Overreacted.

Two years at Bluesky

Two years at Bluesky

He left Meta in July 2023 meaning to rest, then Bluesky pulled him in: React, open source, and a Twitter habit all in one place. He stayed almost two years.

“I wanted to take a long break from work around then”

What he picked up there

React Native internals, a lot of polish work on the app, and a stretch of engineering management. Then he realized the break he skipped could not wait any longer.

He doesn't know what's next

His honest position: he can't tell what happens to his skillset, in building software or in teaching it. Both are changing at once, and no obvious next thing has appeared.

“So for now I'll sit by the river and watch whatever's happening float by.”

The blog came back

He revived overreacted mostly to write about React Server Components, because he kept needing links that didn't exist yet. He's not sure that stream is exhausted.

“I had a bunch of things I wanted to be able to point people to that had no definitive URLs”

Now he's consulting

No code. Technical guidance on UI engineering, mostly React and React Native: architecture, performance, specific deep dives, or higher-level product and infra calls.

How it works

A 1:1 hourly call, one to start, more if it helps. Best for technical leaders or very motivated learners. Someone asked, so he clarified: it isn't free.

“It is unfortunately not free (somebody asked me that so I have to clarify).”

What matters most

You can admit you don't know what's next and still offer the thing you're good at right now.
