Apple's fix for cases that block the screen

iOS 27 hides a toggle that fattens the iPhone Duo's left bezel when a case creeps onto the display.

In brief

iOS 27 hides a toggle that fattens the iPhone Duo's left bezel when a case creeps onto the display. Foldables make cases hard to fit, so Apple built a software escape hatch: trade a sliver of screen for a case that overlaps the edge. Originally reported by PCMAG.

Cases get complicated

Snapping a case on a normal phone takes a second. On a foldable, the fit is fussier, and Apple has added a software setting to paper over accessories that don't line up with the iPhone Duo.

Blogger Nicolas Lellouche caught a feature called Shift Left Edge in iOS 27 during last week's iPhone event. MacRumors picked it up after. Apple's own event video shows the toggle flipping on and off.

What Apple calls it

The settings description is blunt about the problem it solves, and it applies only to the outer display, the one you use when the phone is folded shut.

“Moves content when you are using a case that partially covers the left edge of the outer display”

Twice as thick

Switch it on and the left border roughly doubles in width. Even then the bezel stays slim, so you give up a sliver of screen rather than a stripe.

Black space as a buffer

The extra black margin gives an overlapping case somewhere to sit. Nothing in the picture gets eaten by the accessory hanging over the edge.

Apple's own cases, unclear

Nobody has spent enough time with the Duo to say whether Apple's case and kickstand folio need this turned on. It may exist purely for third-party accessories that miss the mark.

Dates and damage

The Duo runs its own build of iOS 27, with dock apps moved to the right edge for easier thumb reach. Preorders open Oct. 16, launch is Oct. 23, and it starts at $1,999, up to $3,199 for 2TB.

The bottom line

Foldables make cases hard to fit, so Apple built a software escape hatch: trade a sliver of screen for a case that overlaps the edge.
