He throws 3D models at his printer in VR

A Meta Quest 3 user built a way to start a print by flinging a virtual object across the room at a real machine.

In brief

A Meta Quest 3 user built a way to start a print by flinging a virtual object across the room at a real machine. The interface was the easy part. The real work was a small local pipeline from headset to PC to printer, dressed up as a throw. Originally reported by PCMAG.

Throw it at the printer

Throw it at the printer

A hobbyist found a new way to start a 3D print: pick up the model with a virtual hand and hurl it at the actual printer sitting in the room.

Passthrough makes it possible

He models on a virtual display while in passthrough mode on a Meta Quest 3, so the real printer stays visible through the headset the whole time.

The printer is a Bambu Lab P2S

Jon Martindale

PCMag rated the P2S highly, but it has no native Quest 3 interface. Nothing about this setup was designed to work with a headset.

The pipeline behind the trick

Bambu Lab printers expose a local API. Hank runs his PC as a web server, the Quest app sends the model file there, and the PC passes it to the printer.

“The throwing is just a way to visualize it within the virtual space.”

Vibe-coded and fragile

The whole thing was built fast and loose, so it does not work across other devices or setups. He says he will share the code once it is cleaned up.

A pattern, not a one-off

He has been using GPT-6 Astra to reverse-engineer games into VR and the browser, including Super Smash Bros Melee and a multiplayer Chao Garden web app.

Why a gimmick matters

Lowering the friction between the headset and real hardware is what makes mixed reality useful. A throw is silly, but it removes a menu and a file transfer.

What to remember

The interface was the easy part. The real work was a small local pipeline from headset to PC to printer, dressed up as a throw.
