iPhone 13 vs iPhone 18: Five years of upgrades
From cameras to battery life, here's what's changed between Apple's 2021 and 2026 flagships.
In brief
From cameras to battery life, here's what's changed between Apple's 2021 and 2026 flagships. The iPhone 13 is aging fast. USB-C, 48MP cameras, 34-hour battery life, and Apple Intelligence make the iPhone 18 worth upgrading to. Originally reported by PCMAG.
Design holds up after five years
The iPhone 13's squared-off silhouette, MagSafe, and IP68 rating still feel modern. The iPhone 18 Pro adds an aluminum unibody design and larger screens at 6.3 and 6.9 inches versus the 13's 6.1 inches.
Dynamic Island beats the notch
The iPhone 13's notch was narrower but taller. The iPhone 18 Pro's Dynamic Island is now 25% shorter and supports three live activities instead of two, keeping you informed without blocking content.
Bezels keep getting thinner

Apple has been shaving down bezels for five years. The iPhone 18 continues with ultra-slim display frames for more screen real estate, though this matters less if you prefer thumb space.
120Hz finally comes to base models
The iPhone 13 was stuck at 60Hz while budget Android phones offered faster refresh rates. The iPhone 17 finally brought 120Hz variable refresh rate to all models, making scrolling and animations much smoother.
“higher refresh rates make scrolling smoother, animations more fluid, and the entire phone feel snappier”
Camera is the biggest gap
The iPhone 13's 12MP main camera is aging fast. The iPhone 18 features 48MP cameras with variable aperture that adjusts light-gathering based on conditions, plus macro focus and 8x optical zoom.
Selfie camera gets a major upgrade
The iPhone 13's 12MP selfie camera is dated. The iPhone 18 has an 18MP front camera with a square sensor that lets you take portrait or landscape selfies without rotating the phone.
Content creators are missing out
The iPhone 13 lacks Action Mode, 4K Cinematic Mode, ProRAW, and ProRes support. The iPhone 18 Pro adds smart-focus tracking and Pro Controls for customizing the camera app.
“If you're a content creator, you're limiting yourself.”
USB-C is the strongest upgrade case
The iPhone 13 is locked to Apple's proprietary Lightning port. USB-C is now the global standard, so you can finally use the same cable for all your devices and borrow chargers anywhere.
“USB-C is now the global standard, so holding onto a Lightning port is self-sabotage.”
Action Button adds quick shortcuts
The iPhone 13 lacks the Action Button that debuted on the iPhone 15. This customizable key lets you trigger the flashlight, launch the camera, record voice memos, or run Apple Shortcuts.
Camera Control is hit or miss
The iPhone 16 introduced a capacitive Camera Control button for instant access to snap photos, capture video, and tweak settings. The iPhone 13 requires using the screen for these actions.
Physical SIM advantage for travelers
The iPhone 13 supports both eSIM and physical SIM cards. The iPhone 18 in the US is eSIM-only, making it harder to swap local SIM cards when traveling abroad without solid Wi-Fi.
“Setting up an eSIM without solid Wi-Fi is a nightmare.”
A20 Pro chip is three times faster
The iPhone 13's A15 Bionic chip scored 1,721 single-core and 4,629 multi-core on Geekbench. The iPhone 18 Pro runs three times faster, engineered on a 2nm process with a dedicated vapor chamber.
Apple Intelligence requires newer chip
The iPhone 13 cannot run Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI suite, even though it supports iOS 27. The A20 Pro chip has the memory bandwidth and thermal performance needed for advanced AI features and an improved Siri.
Battery life gap is massive
The iPhone 13 lasted 19 hours in testing. The iPhone 18 Pro Max ran for 34 hours and 31 minutes. That's 14 extra hours of battery life you're missing by holding onto the iPhone 13.
“You're starving yourself of potentially 14 hours of extra battery life by holding on to the iPhone 13.”
Charging speed jumps from 20W to 60W
The iPhone 13 charges at 20W. The iPhone 18 Pro Max charges at 60W and reaches 50% charge in just 15 minutes, a massive improvement for daily convenience.
Time to upgrade your iPhone 13
The iPhone 18 Pro gets you off Lightning, adds hours of battery life, and puts a vastly superior camera in your pocket. Carrier trade-in incentives can help offset the cost.
“Yes, it's finally time to retire that iPhone 13.”
Can't afford the Pro? Try iPhone 15
If the iPhone 18 Pro is too expensive, aim for an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. You'll get USB-C, upgraded cameras, Apple Intelligence support, and freedom from carrying a portable battery.
What matters most
The iPhone 13 is aging fast. USB-C, 48MP cameras, 34-hour battery life, and Apple Intelligence make the iPhone 18 worth upgrading to.
