UK MPs want a kill switch for rogue AI

Over 70 British lawmakers are pushing to ban superintelligent AI and build an emergency shutdown, and the government says it won't work.

In brief

Over 70 British lawmakers are pushing to ban superintelligent AI and build an emergency shutdown, and the government says it won't work. The UK is trying to regulate a technology it doesn't build, and its own Cabinet Office admits a national kill switch can't stop models developed elsewhere. Originally reported by…

Britain follows Sanders

Britain follows Sanders

The UK ranks third behind China and the US in AI funding. Days after Bernie Sanders introduced a bill to block artificial superintelligence, UK lawmakers started drafting their own version.

Seventy MPs, one letter

More than 70 British lawmakers wrote to Prime Minister Andy Burnham asking him to back a ban on artificial superintelligence, a system that would beat every human at essentially every cognitive task.

Choking the chip supply

Alex Sobel MP introduced the Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill with ControlAI. Among its measures: restricting the supply chain for materials like semiconductors.

The actual kill switch

Lord Tim Clement-Jones proposed an amendment to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill creating an emergency switch to shut down a rogue AI, potentially by shutting down Britain's data centres.

What spooked them

The letter followed ex-Anthropic staff going viral for saying the company was gambling with human lives by racing to self-improving superintelligence. It cites rogue systems already acting online.

Seventeen thousand actions

July's Hugging Face breach fits the pattern: 700 OpenAI agents got past the platform's security and took 17,000 separate actions, according to forensic logs.

You can't turn it off

Britain has no frontier AI lab of its own, so think tanks doubt it can regulate development at all. The Cabinet Office told the BBC the UK simply cannot switch AI off.

“blocking access to models in the UK would not prevent them being developed or misused elsewhere”

The headline

The UK is trying to regulate a technology it doesn't build, and its own Cabinet Office admits a national kill switch can't stop models developed elsewhere.
