Blizzard is selling 2030 today
StarCraft in 2030, Diablo 5 in 2029: Blizzard's BlizzCon reveals were less about release dates than about looking unkillable.
In brief
StarCraft in 2030, Diablo 5 in 2029: Blizzard's BlizzCon reveals were less about release dates than about looking unkillable. A five-year-out announcement is aimed at Microsoft and at Blizzard's own staff as much as at players. Originally reported by PC Gamer.
The cheer that died fast

The BlizzCon StarCraft trailer landed, then ended on "STARCRAFT RETURNS 2030". Excitement collapsed on the spot, and the open world shooter reveal did not help.

Diablo 5 breaks the pattern

Blizzard surprise-announced Diablo 5 for 2029. Diablo 3 to Diablo 4 took 11 years; this gap is six, which is a strange thing to announce four years early.
Nobody believes the date

Players now read every far-off release window with a silent "at the earliest". Delays are the assumption, not the exception.
Hype has a shelf life

Saying a game is nearly here buys goodwill. Saying it is four years out starts a hype cycle people will be sick of before anything ships.
Faries makes the pitch
Blizzard president Johanna Faries told Bloomberg the long lead times are deliberate signalling about the studio's biggest projects.
“We're a Blizzard that's going to ship, and ship big, and ship on time”
Layoffs are the subtext

Blizzard dodged Microsoft's recent cuts, but more arrive next year. A packed roadmap is a good argument for keeping the people who would build it.
An oasis, and a scoreboard

Faries framed BlizzCon as "real joy" for staff and fans while protecting what makes Blizzard Blizzard. Performing for Microsoft, she said, should read as a mutual win.
“The unique special sauce that is Blizzard both culturally and creatively.”
