Dutch PM condemns execution livestream

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten called the US decision to livestream an execution absurd at a press conference in The Hague on Friday.

“Personally, I find it truly absurd to broadcast a death penalty execution live.”

Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, convicted of killing thirteen people at Fort Hood in two thousand nine, is scheduled to be executed on December third. The Pentagon will livestream it.

European platforms must block broadcast

Jetten said European social media platforms have a responsibility to prevent the execution from being broadcast on the continent, though he fears it will be impossible to stop.

“As far as I'm concerned, it is really up to the social media platforms in Europe to prevent this from being circulated and broadcast on their channels.”

UN says livestream would breach torture ban

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights told AFP that livestreaming an execution is tantamount to a public execution and would breach the absolute prohibition of torture.
