Germany targets AI sovereignty by 2030

Germany's government task force released a blueprint to make the country a sovereign AI nation by 2030, narrowing the gap with leading AI hubs in the U.S. and China.

“The next 12 to 18 months will therefore be decisive in setting the course.”

Berlin plans partnerships and industrial focus

Germany wants to secure access to leading AI models while strengthening European alternatives through expanded cooperation with France and Canada, particularly with French AI company Mistral.

“We are leveraging collaborations with like-minded partners in the EU and worldwide (especially France and Canada) to benefit the German AI ecosystem and ensure sovereign access.”

Government to act as strategic customer

To speed AI development, the government plans to use public contracts and pilot projects to help European AI providers enter the market and boost industrial productivity through AI.

Ambitious targets but financing unclear

By 2030, Germany wants 80% of large companies and 55% of small and medium-size businesses using AI, plus 90% of federal agencies with at least one AI application.
