Why Willie Lampkin won't replace Landon Dickerson yet

Eagles fans want Lampkin at left guard, but Drew Kendall is ahead on the depth chart for good reason.

In brief

Eagles fans want Lampkin at left guard, but Drew Kendall is ahead on the depth chart for good reason. Drew Kendall has more experience at left guard and is ahead of Willie Lampkin on the depth chart, making him the logical choice to replace Dickerson. Originally reported by Philadelphia Eagles On SI.

Dickerson's replacement remains unclear

The Eagles aren't revealing their long term plans to replace injured left guard Landon Dickerson. Drew Kendall is the expected replacement while Dickerson is on injured reserve.

Multiple lineup options on the table

The Eagles could start Kendall at left guard or move him to center with Cam Jurgens shifting to guard. The latter option isn't considered a good idea.

Fans are pushing for Lampkin

Willie Lampkin is behind Kendall on the depth chart but fans have latched onto him as the answer. The depth chart is compiled by the Eagles communications department.

Lampkin earned his roster spot

Lampkin had such a strong summer that he not only made the roster but entered consideration for future plans. He's now part of the team's interior line depth.

Roseman praised the interior depth

GM Howie Roseman said interior offensive line depth was his top training camp priority. He specifically praised the growth of Kendall, Lampkin, and Micah Morris.

“If any of you would've given me a truth serum and said, 'What are you looking for in training camp?' It would be how our interior offensive line depth panned out”

Eagles believe Lampkin is ready

The team has confidence that Lampkin can step in if needed and an elevation is coming. But for right now, the job should go to Drew Kendall.

Lampkin lacks left guard experience

Lampkin has never played left guard in a preseason game for the Eagles. He's only played center and right guard, and it's unclear if he's getting left guard reps in practice.

Kendall has the experience edge

Kendall has preseason experience at left guard and has been the top guard subbing for Dickerson and Tyler Steen during training camp. Lampkin is still developing.

Lampkin spent last year on IR

Just a year ago, Lampkin was on injured reserve after the Eagles claimed him from the Rams. The team had him sit out the entire year to develop for this season.

Center may be Lampkin's future

Lampkin played well at center in the preseason and is a force in the run game. He gets the snap off quick and uses his lower body to create space in the A-gap.

Eagles need to evaluate Kendall

The Eagles have to see what they have in Kendall right now. There's a huge difference between being a starter at a foreign position and being the No. 4 guard.

Kendall excels at center too

Kendall was drafted as a center and played 62 snaps there in Week 18 last season. He allowed just one pressure, a 2.2% pressure rate per dropback.

Moving Jurgens creates new problems

If Cam Jurgens moves to guard, it's because Kendall is more comfortable at center. But the Eagles would be creating another problem by moving a Pro Bowl center.

Kendall is ahead no matter what

No matter how the lineup shakes out, Kendall is above Lampkin right now. Lampkin won't start in Week 2 and needs more time to develop at both positions.

What to remember

Drew Kendall has more experience at left guard and is ahead of Willie Lampkin on the depth chart, making him the logical choice to replace Dickerson.
