Flyers expect much more from Tyson Foerster

The 24-year-old winger just signed an eight-year extension, and GM Danny Brière sees him as a future leader.

In brief

The 24-year-old winger just signed an eight-year extension, and GM Danny Brière sees him as a future leader. Tyson Foerster's eight-year, $56.8 million extension reflects the Flyers' belief he'll be a core leader for years to come. Originally reported by PhillyVoice.

Foerster healthy for camp

Tyson Foerster is finally fully healthy for Flyers training camp this week. GM Danny Brière says the team is relieved to have him locked in long-term.

Other teams want him

When Brière talks to other teams about trades, Foerster is always one of the first names they ask for. That tells the Flyers how valuable he is.

“One of the first names that always comes up going the other way, teams want Tyson.”

Eight years, $56.8 million

Foerster signed an eight-year, $56.8 million extension in July. The deal locks him in as a core piece a full year before he would've hit restricted free agency.

Consecutive 20-goal seasons

Through his first two NHL seasons, Foerster posted 20 and then 25 goals. He's established himself as a reliable two-way checking forward.

Elbow injury from Worlds

Foerster needed elbow surgery after playing for Team Canada at IIHF Worlds. It was initially expected to cost him part of the season, but he made opening night.

Leading scorer until December

Foerster was the Flyers' best player and leading scorer early last season. Then another injury to the same arm in December threatened to end his year.

Could've hit 40 goals

Without the mid-season injury, Foerster likely would've been a high-30s to even 40-goal scorer. He's compared to Mark Stone or a new-age Rod Brind'Amour.

The playoff-clinching shootout goal

The playoff-clinching shootout goal

Foerster returned in time for the playoff push despite not being expected back. He scored the deciding shootout goal in Game 81 against Carolina to clinch.

Strong in the playoffs

His offensive production dropped in the playoffs, but Foerster was still strong along the walls and defensively dependable under heavy minutes.

Face of the rebuild

Foerster is a quieter face of a Flyers process that just transitioned from rebuild to playoff contention. Philadelphia might be a hockey hub again.

Future leadership group

Brière expects Foerster to soon be part of the leadership group, maybe even wearing a letter on his chest. He's got the abilities for it.

“Pretty soon, if he's not already, he's gonna be part of that leadership group.”

Big expectations moving forward

The eight-year extension shows the confidence the Flyers have in Foerster. Brière expects big things from him going forward.

“I expect big things moving forward.”

At a glance

Tyson Foerster's eight-year, $56.8 million extension reflects the Flyers' belief he'll be a core leader for years to come.
