Hurts carries a broken Eagles offense past Washington
No run game, leaky protection, and the Eagles still won Week 1 because a few players refused to lose.
In brief
No run game, leaky protection, and the Eagles still won Week 1 because a few players refused to lose. The Eagles won on individual brilliance, not on a functioning offense. Dickerson and the run blocking have to get fixed fast. Originally reported by PhillyVoice.
55 snaps, one clear story
The Eagles ran 55 offensive snaps and 70 on defense in their Week 1 win over Washington. The snap counts tell you who the staff actually trusts.
Hurts was the reason
Jalen Hurts played all 55 offensive snaps and made about half a dozen big plays. Without them, a team with no run game and shaky protection loses this one.
“Hurts was the reason the Eagles won this game.”
Barkley had nowhere to go
Saquon Barkley took 39 snaps and posted a 2nd percentile mark in yards before contact, per SumerSports. That run would rank 2,729th out of 2,785 qualifying games.
“Barkley had absolutely nowhere to run all evening.”
5.5 a carry anyway
Barkley still finished with 15 carries for 83 yards. A 42-yard run set up a touchdown, which means the other 14 carries went almost nowhere.
Shipley's odd cameo
Will Shipley got 10 snaps, more than expected, including two carries on a pivotal fourth-quarter drive right before Goedert's long touchdown.
The ball got spread around
DeVonta Smith played 52 snaps and drew 6 targets, but Goedert (5), Wicks (4) and Lemon (4) were all in the mix. Nobody dominated the distribution.
Smith drew the coverage
Smith finished with 3 catches for 53 yards and looked like he was getting extra defensive attention. Make someone else beat you, and Goedert and Wicks did.
The onside kick save
Smith handled a tough bounce on the onside kick. A lesser player lets it clang off a shoulder, Washington recovers, and kicks a game-winning field goal.
“There's a world where a lesser player is trying to field that kick.”
Wicks can run routes
Dontayvion Wicks played 50 snaps in his Eagles debut and turned 4 targets into 2 catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. A real find.
“Wicks had a good Eagles debut. Dude can run routes.”
Lemon's rough debut
Makai Lemon got 35 snaps and produced 3 catches for minus 5 yards. Snaps help him grow, but Darius Cooper, Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore are better right now.
Goedert looked young again

Dallas Goedert played 52 snaps, caught 4 of 5 targets for 77 yards and 2 scores, and moved faster than he did all last season. The decline worry got answered.
“But he looked great in the debut.”
Dickerson is a problem
The whole line went all 55 snaps, and Landon Dickerson had a brutal game. He can't be left on an island in pass protection anymore.
“The Eagles are also going to have to consider benching him if he isn't significantly better.”
The fix costs somewhere else
Sliding Cam Jurgens toward Dickerson means Tyler Steen wins one-on-ones all day. And this is likely the healthiest Dickerson will be all season.
Pressure without the hit
Jalyx Hunt (53) and Nolan Smith (47) led the edge snaps, but the Eagles barely touched Jayden Daniels. The mush rush may have been the plan, keeping him from escaping with his legs.
Carter never left the field
Jalen Carter played 66 of 70 interior snaps and blocked a PAT. Byron Young got 6, Ty Robinson none. That workload isn't sustainable.
“Playing 66 of 70 iDL snaps isn't easy.”
Baun and the back end

Zack Baun played every snap and looked like his 2024 self. Mitchell, Woolen and Mukuba held up; Cooper DeJean owned a rough night in the locker room.
“Baun was everywhere.”
The essence
The Eagles won on individual brilliance, not on a functioning offense. Dickerson and the run blocking have to get fixed fast.
