Jalen Hurts saved a messy Eagles opener

In brief
Philadelphia's new offense sputtered for most of Week 1, then its quarterback made every play that mattered. The Eagles won 24-22 because Hurts made plays the scheme never created, and that is not a formula that holds up over a season. Originally reported by PhillyVoice.
Third and 18, fourth quarter
Up by one, the Eagles faced 3rd and 18 on a possession that looked finished. Then Hurts took over.
“The Eagles were left at a 3rd and 18, and were looking dead in the water”
A hole up the middle

Hurts saw daylight at the line, tucked the ball and sprinted. A block from rookie Makai Lemon let him cut right and tumble 22 yards past the marker.
“Jalen Hurts with a BIG gain of 22.”
The winning throw

A few plays later Hurts audibled and snapped on a confused Washington defense, threading a ball over the middle to Dallas Goedert, who spun and ran it in.
Final score, 24-22
The Eagles beat the Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field to open a 2026 season loaded with expectations. It wasn't pretty, but it was enough.
“It wasn't pretty, but it was enough.”
A rookie playcaller's rough debut
Sean Mannion called his first game from the booth upstairs, and he saw the same problems the nearly 70,000 fans in the stands did.
The line is the problem
Pockets collapsed fast around Hurts. Outside one 42-yard burst, Saquon Barkley kept running into walls at the line of scrimmage or behind it.
Washington owned the clock
The Commanders outpossessed Philadelphia 33:20 to 26:40 and won first downs 20-10. The Eagles rarely stayed on the field.
Seven punts in eleven drives
Most Eagles possessions went nowhere. They fell behind the sticks over and over, and the players knew afterward it wasn't acceptable.
Echoes of 2025
Without the scoreboard, this offense looked like last season's sputtering, frustrating version. Same stalls, same short drives.
“you could've easily confused the 2026 Eagles offense for the constantly sputtering”
The 64-yard bomb
From under center on play action, Hurts saw Dontayvion Wicks open on a route that wasn't the call, and dropped it in for 64 yards to reach goal-to-go.
“Once I broke on the out on the deep one, I saw the ball in the air and just kept running. It was put on the money.”
First touchdown, from the 18
A 10-yard Cam Jurgens hold pushed the drive back to the Washington 18. On third down Goedert ran the seam and Hurts lofted it between two defenders.
Composure under two rushers
After Barkley's 42-yard run, Wicks cut to the left corner and froze corner Mike Sainristil. Hurts held steady against two crashing tacklers and got the throw off clean.
Goedert's second score

The late strike to Goedert gave Philadelphia eight points of breathing room and took the wind out of Washington's rally.
“Goedert with his second TD of the night”
Hurts kept it simple
Asked about the fourth quarter, the quarterback gave his usual flat answer and moved on.
“It's just playing ball. Going out there and playing ball.”
Week 1 decides nothing
Opponents adapt fast and the schedule is full of traps. Mannion's staff cannot let the offensive line get carved up like this again.
History cuts both ways
The 2024 Super Bowl run proves Hurts can carry a team. But 2023 and 2025 both saw injury and stale playcalling send the Eagles into a tailspin.
“He's able to make plays when the play isn't there.”
The takeaway
The Eagles won 24-22 because Hurts made plays the scheme never created, and that is not a formula that holds up over a season.
