Believing you have a say makes you feel better

Three studies suggest that feeling like an actor in your own life, not a spectator, lifts your daily mood.

In brief

Three studies suggest that feeling like an actor in your own life, not a spectator, lifts your daily mood. When something goes wrong, ask what you can still choose. That question alone shifts how the day feels. Originally reported by Psychologies.

Give up or push back

Give up or push back

A project collapses or work news sours. You can accept the loss, or try a new angle and a new pitch. That fork seems to shape your daily mood more than you would expect.

Researchers tracked 429 adults in Germany with five questionnaires a day for six days, collecting over 9,200 ratings of how they felt in that exact moment.

Fifteen percent per point

Each extra point on the free will belief scale matched a 15% higher chance of reporting a good mood. The link held after controlling for life satisfaction, self-control, age, education, religion and politics.

It repeated across Europe

A second study followed 952 people in five European countries during Euro 2024. Again, those who believed more in their capacity to choose reported more everyday happiness.

The experiment that flipped it

1,053 adults were randomly given arguments for or against free will, then asked to recall matching experiences. The free will group scored 5.20 on positive emotion against 3.25 for the other.

Not everything is possible

Illness, job loss and money trouble do not vanish through positive thinking. The move is smaller: book the appointment, ask for help, change one habit, or pick how you react.

“Lorsque tout semble bloqué, se demander "qu'est-ce que je peux encore faire ?"”

The essence

When something goes wrong, ask what you can still choose. That question alone shifts how the day feels.
