Places have a type

Some neighbourhoods run on family barbecues and tables for two. Others are full of single people and varied life paths, where living alone raises no eyebrows.

The setting talks back

Research in Psychological Science asks whether that everyday backdrop seeps into the relationship itself, and finds satisfaction is not quite the same everywhere.

Across Britain, people in couples reported higher life satisfaction than single people on average. But the size of that gap moved region by region.

The gap widens where couples cluster

In regions with the most couples, the advantage was sharpest. Where couples were scarcer, it faded. The same pattern showed up across 218 London neighbourhoods.

Singles are not the ones suffering

Single people's satisfaction barely shifted with location. What changed was how happy coupled people said they were when romance was the local norm.

Fitting in feels good

Matching the local norm brings social validation, easier support and plans people understand without explanation. Age, income, education and health were controlled for, and the link held.

“Les personnes ne vivent pas isolées de leur environnement.”
