Ryan Browne is giving Purdue reason to believe

Purdue stuck with Ryan Browne after a rough 2025, and his cleaner, steadier start is changing the mood in West Lafayette.

In brief

Purdue stuck with Ryan Browne after a rough 2025, and his cleaner, steadier start is changing the mood in West Lafayette. Browne’s jump is real so far, but Purdue still needs his cleaner play and improved support to turn close games into wins. Originally reported by Purdue Boilermarkers On SI.

A rough first year

Ryan Browne absorbed plenty of blame during Purdue’s 2-10 season. In his first year starting, he threw 10 interceptions against only nine touchdowns.

Odom stayed all in

Barry Odom made Browne the story of Purdue’s offseason by backing him fully. He did not add a transfer quarterback and named Browne the 2026 starter.

The bet is working

Sep 4, 2026; West Lafayette, Indiana, USA; Purdue Boilermakers quarterback Ryan Browne (15).

Through two games, Browne has thrown for a Big Ten-best 646 yards with four touchdowns and no turnovers. Purdue lost to Wake Forest, but the quarterback looked different.

Focus on the good

After the Wake Forest loss, Browne wanted Purdue to keep sight of what worked. He saw enough positives to believe the team can win plenty of games.

“We did so many good things, we have a chance to win a lot of ball games this year”

A leader’s tone

That response is what Purdue wants from its starting quarterback. Browne’s leadership is one reason Odom’s staff stayed high on him before the stats improved.

The biggest change

The most meaningful jump is ball security. Browne has not turned it over, which directly attacks the biggest flaw from last season.

Keeping Purdue alive

If Browne had played like last year, Purdue probably does not push Wake Forest to double overtime. His cleaner decisions kept the Boilermakers in the game.

The run game helps

Fame Ijeobi has given Browne a stronger ground game to lean on. That makes the offense less dependent on the quarterback forcing plays.

“It makes things a lot easier, especially for the quarterback”

More than yards

Browne praised Ijeobi for the hidden work too, especially blocking and being a reliable teammate. Purdue’s quarterback now has help that shows up beyond rushing totals.

“He blocks his butt off. He’s a great teammate”

A better setup

Purdue’s “Cradle of Quarterbacks” label is a lot to carry, but Browne looks better equipped this season. The system around him is giving him a fairer chance.

Wins must follow

The next step is plain: Purdue has to convert improvement into results. Browne has changed the direction of the conversation, but the standings still matter most.

The main idea

Browne’s jump is real so far, but Purdue still needs his cleaner play and improved support to turn close games into wins.
