Why the skater uniform gave way to suits

An editor tracks the quiet moment his office wardrobe swapped sneakers for tailoring, without ever announcing it.

In brief

An editor tracks the quiet moment his office wardrobe swapped sneakers for tailoring, without ever announcing it. Style shifts are rarely a decision. You just start reaching for a different thing, and one day someone notices. Originally reported by Robb Report.

A colleague said something

A couple of years ago, someone at the office pointed out a change in how the editor was dressing. The delivery landed somewhere between impressed and puzzled.

“You've been wearing more suits lately.”

He wasn't wrong

The observation stuck because it was true. The shift had been happening quietly, without any decision to dress differently.

“He wasn't wrong.”

Middle-aged skater, on repeat

Before that, the office uniform was generous to describe. Plaid over-layer, white tee, loose trousers, sneakers, worn the same way most days.

“plaid overskirt, white tee, relaxed trousers, and sneakers”

Still in the rotation

The old look never got retired. It still turns up, just no longer as the default setting.

“To be clear, I still sometimes do.”

Reaching for the suit

What changed was the instinct. Tailoring became the thing he pulled off the rack more often, and that pull is what the Fall Style Issue chases.

“But I had started reaching for suits more often.”

Here's the gist

Style shifts are rarely a decision. You just start reaching for a different thing, and one day someone notices.
