GOP scrambles before midterms

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, MD - SEPTEMBER 14: Vice President JD Vance talks to reporters before he boards Air Force Two on September 14, 2026 at Joint Base Andrews, Ma

With just weeks until the midterm elections, Republicans are struggling to convince voters disillusioned by their performance over the past two years.

Vance's plea: give us another chance

Vice President JD Vance appeared on the All In podcast asking voters to stick with Republicans for another couple of years to continue their work.

“Give us another chance. Give us another couple years to continue to work on the amazing things that we've been doing for the past two years.”

Culture war messaging over economics

Republicans are refocusing on immigration, anti-trans policies, and communist threats. But voters were primarily driven by economic stagnation, inflation, and high prices.

Trump made economy worse

Trump made economy worse

Trump promised prosperity but delivered trade wars, tariffs that hurt working families, a costly war with Iran, and tax cuts for the wealthy paid for by cutting social safety nets.

Trump tells voters to pretend he's on ballot

At an emergency Republican convention, Trump instructed voters to pretend he's on the ballot. Vance warned against throwing out the baby with the bathwater over policy disagreements.

“Do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Don't give the country over to a bunch of crazy people because you happen to disagree with us on a policy issue here or there.”

The key point

Republicans are relying on culture war messaging and pleas for loyalty rather than addressing the economic problems that drove voters to Trump in the first place.
