Sacramento Kings in precarious position

The Sacramento Kings enter the 2026-27 NBA season in a precarious position as a rebuilding team with young players and veterans.

Karaban and Sharp in rotation battle

Darius Acuff Jr. is cemented in the starting point guard spot, but rookies Emanuel Sharp and Alex Karaban must work their way into the rotation.

Karaban's preseason performance

Karaban played only 16 minutes in the first preseason game, scoring three points on one-of-three field goals with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Karaban's focus on team role

Karaban emphasized being a reliable scorer and team connector to help the Kings win games, stating he aims to bring value every day.

“Just someone who’s reliable with the shot, but then also just trying to do the little things to help the team win. And that’s what I envision myself to do to help this team. That’s something I’m gonna try to do every single day to bring value.”

Karaban's role advantage

Karaban has an uphill battle to crack the main rotation but could force the coaching staff's hand partway through the season with his role-specific skills.

NBA role player importance

The Kings need players who do the dirty work that isn't noticed by fans, unlike veterans who may not have the exact skill set.

LaVine's role limitations

Zach LaVine, a scorer through and through, cannot become a solid defender or facilitator, making role players like Karaban essential.

Balanced rotation strategy

Adding low-usage players like Karaban, Sharp, and Nique Clifford could create a balanced rotation for the Kings this season.

What happens next

Karaban's ability to fill the role of a team connector could secure his spot in the Kings' rotation by mid-season.
