101-mph grounder hits Miller's leg
Mason Miller took a screaming ground ball off his calf but stayed in to close out the Padres' 8-7 win over the Rockies on Monday night.
Miller records 37th save anyway
The grounder from Kyle Karros struck Miller's outer calf. He retired the next two batters to finish the inning and log save number 37.
Walking fine after the game
Miller's right calf was wrapped in ice after the game, but he walked without a limp and told reporters he was fine.
Grateful it wasn't worse
Miller expects some soreness but said game adrenaline helped. He's thankful it was a grounder and not a line drive.
“I'll take a one-hopper before a line drive for sure. So grateful to walk away from it without any real issues.”
Workload already a concern
Miller's next appearance will set a new career high for innings pitched. The physical toll of his season was already being monitored before the injury.
Miller dismisses workload worries
When asked about fatigue concerns, Miller said there's no concern until it becomes one. He plans to keep preparing and stay ready.
“No concern. I mean, until it becomes a concern, it's not a concern.”
Velocity stayed strong
Miller threw only five pitches after the injury, but his fastball still hit 100.4 mph and his sliders ranged from 86.8 to 89.1 mph.
Padres closing in on playoffs
San Diego holds a 2.5-game lead over Arizona in the NL wild card race with 12 games left. Miller will be essential to clinching a postseason spot.
