Servo's first year of sponsored development

A long-time maintainer reflects on what donations enabled for the open-source browser engine.

In brief

A long-time maintainer reflects on what donations enabled for the open-source browser engine. Community funding allowed a core Servo maintainer to focus on improving the contributor experience, resulting in measurable progress on maintenance, documentation, and project accessibility. Servo gets its first sponsored role

Josh Bowman-Matthews, a long-time Servo maintainer, began working part-time on the project in September 2025, funded entirely by community donations through OpenCollective and GitHub Sponsors.

“those donations have enabled me to devote significant time to a project that I care a lot about”

Scaling up the maintainer team

Bowman-Matthews nominated 8 new maintainers and reviewed 1,150 pull requests, helping distribute responsibility across the project and making it easier for others to contribute.

Fixing the test infrastructure

He diagnosed and fixed numerous intermittent test failures that were blocking pull request merges, and uncovered broken window.open behavior that was causing flaky tests across the codebase.

Documenting for new contributors

Bowman-Matthews wrote new documentation on borrow hazards, experimental features, the AI policy, and how to find tasks. He also filed 114 issues specifically targeted at newer contributors, with 92% already fixed.

Supporting a major engine rewrite

He helped coordinate a large-scale rewrite of Servo's JavaScript engine integration to fix garbage collection panics, reviewing pull requests and filing issues that spread the work across multiple contributors.

Sustainable open source work

The role allowed Bowman-Matthews to balance family time with meaningful contributions, while helping secure another contributor's grant to work on Servo. Each monthly donation made a measurable difference.

“I've found a healthy balance that allows me to spend time with my family as well as make meaningful contributions”

Here's the gist

Community funding allowed a core Servo maintainer to focus on improving the contributor experience, resulting in measurable progress on maintenance, documentation, and project accessibility.
