Santa Cruz officers

California Highway Patrol officers in Santa Cruz received calls about an emu walking into traffic after it escaped from its owner.

“While we often deal with dogs, cats, deer, and occasionally birds, an emu was unexpected!”

Emu escape

The emu, second-largest bird in the world, grew to 6 feet tall and 120 pounds and is native only to Australia.

Recovery complete

The owner and officers recovered the emu after it escaped from its owner and walked into traffic.

“A big shoutout and thank you to everyone who called in to help us handle this unique situation!”
