Trott steps in for Flintoff

Jonathan Trott has taken over as England Lions head coach after Andrew Flintoff stepped down in August. Trott already led the Lions to a T20 series win over Sri Lanka.

Three-time Ashes winner

Trott played 52 Tests for England between 2009 and 2015, averaging 44.08 and winning the Ashes three times. He also represented England in 68 ODIs.

Afghanistan success caught attention

Trott's stock rose after taking Afghanistan to the T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024. He was considered for England's Test coaching role, which went to Stephen Fleming.

Six months of winter tours

Trott, 45, will lead the Lions on three tours: West Indies from October 27 to November 21, South Africa from November 25 to December 23, and Sri Lanka from February 18 to March 14.

Lions experience shaped his career

Trott played for the Lions himself and credits the programme with helping his development. He believes the experience is invaluable for preparing players for international cricket.

“Having played for the Lions myself, I know how valuable the experience can be in helping players develop, both on and off the field.”

ECB backs his appointment

Ed Barney, England and Wales Cricket Board men's performance director, praised Trott as an outstanding coach with proven international experience and knowledge of the Lions pathway.

“Jonathan Trott is an outstanding coach who has a proven record in international cricket.”
