The twin brother of Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon joins AFC Wimbledon after a difficult three years in Manchester.
In brief
The twin brother of Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon joins AFC Wimbledon after a difficult three years in Manchester. Steven Sessegnon has returned to south-west London to restart his career at AFC Wimbledon after being sidelined at Wigan, where he learned the importance of professionalism even when lacking playing time…
Twin brothers face off for first time
Steven and Ryan Sessegnon played against each other for the first time ever last month at Craven Cottage, each holding their daughters as they walked out together.
Three years away from home
Steven spent three years at Wigan Athletic in Manchester while his twin brother Ryan played for Fulham, making family reunions difficult during that period.
Back to his roots in south-west London

Sessegnon has returned to the area where he grew up, near Fulham's academy and training ground, and can now see his family multiple times a week.
“It's really wholesome to be back. It helps massively being around family.”
Injuries derailed his Wigan career

After playing 29 games in his first season at Wigan in 2023-24, Sessegnon suffered calf and knee injuries and didn't play again from January 4, 2025.
Placed on transfer list by new manager
When Gary Caldwell took over at Wigan in February 2025, he placed Sessegnon on the transfer list and told him he wouldn't play.
Deployed out of position
Despite being a defender, Sessegnon was asked to play centre-back for the first time when Caldwell did select him, a position he had never played before.
A tough but valuable lesson

Sessegnon describes his final months at Wigan as very tough, but says he learned the importance of professionalism and maintaining standards even when lacking trust and playing time.
“The biggest thing was professionalism. Even in the worst stages when I wasn't playing, I could still carry myself and be the best possible person.”
Released and heading home

Wigan released Sessegnon in the summer, and he immediately signed a two-year deal with AFC Wimbledon on June 25 after receiving a call about the local opportunity.
“As soon as they said Wimbledon, local, I said 'let's get it sorted'.”
Six months without competitive football
Sessegnon's first appearance for Wimbledon came on August 8 against Newport in the Carabao Cup, nearly six months after his last competitive game for Wigan.
League debut and gradual return
His full league debut came on September 7 in a 2-0 win over Bromley, and he has come off the bench a few times to ease back into competitive football.
Simple, effective football at Wimbledon
Sessegnon says Wimbledon's straightforward approach is the simplest football he's played but also the most effective, allowing him to get the ball high up the pitch.
“It's probably the simplest football I've played in my career, but the most effective.”
Wimbledon's solid defensive record
The Dons have recorded five clean sheets from seven games so far, joint-most in the Sky Bet EFL, despite scoring only five goals.
Defying relegation odds at home
Despite being among bookmakers' favourites for relegation, Wimbledon sit four points behind leaders Bradford and Sessegnon now has the chance to help them defy the odds near where his career began.
