Trump welcomes Stevens to GOP

President Donald Trump invited outgoing Michigan congresswoman Haley Stevens to join the Republican Party at an Iowa rally on Sunday, the final weekend before the November third midterm elections.

“I think I'd probably, I'd love her to join the Republican Party actually.”

Stevens lost primary to El-Sayed

Stevens ran for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat but lost the Democratic primary to progressive Abdul El-Sayed in August. The two have been at odds over antisemitism concerns.

Dispute over antisemitism ad

On Friday, Stevens demanded El-Sayed denounce an ad blaming Michigan's cost-of-living issues on U.S.aid to Israel.

Stevens disinvited from campaign event

Rep.Debbie Dingell disinvited Stevens from a planned Democratic campaign event on Sunday because of her strained relationship with El-Sayed.Dingell said there was nothing to be gained by the two being in the same place.

Stevens endorses Rogers instead

On Sunday, Stevens appeared at an event with Republican Mike Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit and endorsed him for Senate. She said El-Sayed told her to stay away from his campaign.

“Our Democratic nominee for Senate, Abdul, said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he's right. And that's why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

Democrats condemn the endorsement

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Stevens' endorsement a despicable betrayal.Nancy Pelosi said Stevens dangerously betrayed Michigan families.Elissa Slotkin said anyone making the election about themselves should think hard about serving the greater good.

Stevens' staff resigns in protest

Stevens' chief of staff and multiple staffers resigned on Sunday. Her former chief of staff Justin German wrote that the election was too important to sow division. Her communications director also left his post.

“This election is too important to sow division or stand on the sidelines.”

Michigan Democrats disown Stevens

The Michigan Democratic Party distanced itself from Stevens. State party chair Curtis Hertel posted that Stevens is not a current member of the Michigan Democratic Party nor will she be in the future.

Republicans seize the moment

Mike Rogers touted Stevens' endorsement on social media, saying she showed courage and bravery in putting Michigan first. House Speaker Mike Johnson commended her for standing for truth.
