Three leaders on staying dominant
Scott Kirby of United Airlines, Ruth Porat of Alphabet, and Bill Ford of Ford Motor Company spoke Tuesday at a TIME100 Talk about how their companies have adapted and dominated their industries throughout the years.
Ford prioritizes people and values
Bill Ford said his company's enduring success comes from timeless values. We take care of each other, our communities, and our country. Those values are what have sustained Ford for its whole lifetime.
“We take care of each other. We take care of our communities. We take care of our country.”
Alphabet bets on innovation and ambition

Ruth Porat stressed long-term investing and relentless innovation. Alphabet's twenty percent time policy lets employees dedicate a fifth of their workload to great ideas, which produced Gmail and Google Brain. The company sets ambitious goals expecting to achieve only sixty percent.
“If we achieve 60% of the objectives we set out in a year, that is success.”
United focuses on four business pillars
Scott Kirby described United Airlines as a brand loyal airline focused on reliability, service, hard product, and technology. The airline aims to surprise customers consistently with new offerings and maintain high standards across all four areas.
“We need to wow them consistently.”
Kirby's goal: no more furloughs
Looking ahead, Kirby said his north star is setting up United so there is never again a furlough at the airline. He acknowledged the COVID pandemic was the most existential financial crisis that ever existed in aviation, but protecting employees remains his priority.
“My number one goal, my north star for the company, is actually going to be to set the company up so that there's never again a furlough at the airline.”
Ford and Alphabet look to the future
Porat said Alphabet will launch an AI data center on Thursday as part of expanding into space, asking how to build efficiently using resources wisely. Bill Ford hopes Ford will remain the most American car company in twenty five years while making customers' lives better by giving back their most precious asset, which is time.
“I think what gets me most excited is the fact that we will still be the most American car company 25 years from now.”
