Shooting at Bend elementary school

A sixteen-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher before a community member shot and killed the suspect.

The victims and injured

Police Chief Mike Krantz said the children killed were aged five, eight and eleven. A seven-year-old and a fifty-four-year-old teacher were transported to St. Charles Bend hospital with critical injuries.

How the shooting unfolded

At twelve fifty-nine pm, police received a nine one one call reporting gunfire. The suspect forced his way into Silver Rail Elementary, about one hundred twenty miles southeast of Portland, by firing at locked doors.

Community member stops the shooter

A community member spotted the suspect entering the school, pursued him inside and shot him dead. Police Chief Krantz said the suspect was a male city resident who has not yet been publicly identified.

Political response to the shooting

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said her heart was absolutely broken over the incident. Senator Ron Wyden called for common-sense gun laws to reduce the risk of more school shootings.

“No parent should have to have this kind of day, and no community should have to live through this kind of day.”
