Trump bans three news outlets from White House

CNN, MSNBC, and Politico sued after losing press credentials, sparking a rare show of solidarity from other major networks.

In brief

CNN, MSNBC, and Politico sued after losing press credentials, sparking a rare show of solidarity from other major networks. Trump's media ban tests First Amendment protections as other news organizations unite against government retaliation for coverage. Originally reported by TIME.

Three outlets banned from White House

Trump banned CNN, MSNBC, and Politico from the White House on Friday, citing their "fake news" coverage. The outlets immediately sued to protect their First Amendment rights.

“This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights.”

Reporters locked out immediately

Over the weekend, reporters from the three outlets arrived at the White House to find their badges disabled and were asked to surrender them. No advance notice was given.

“The officer asked me to hand over my badge. He said that it was disabled.”

Trump defends the ban

Trump defends the ban

Trump said the White House is not attacking free press but targeting "fake news" that is "totally out of control" and a threat to national security.

White House: access is a privilege

The White House argued that while the First Amendment protects outlets' right to publish, it does not guarantee them White House press passes, briefing room seats, or pool access.

“White House access is a privilege, not a right.”

VP Vance reframes it as access issue

Vice President J.D. Vance said Trump is not banning outlets but denying them special White House access for engaging in what he called propaganda.

“What he's doing is saying we're not gonna give you special access to the White House if you engage in what is effectively propaganda.”

Other networks refuse to replace CNN

ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC declined to send replacement crews for CNN's assigned White House pool coverage, meaning no TV pool will cover Trump's designated events.

“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government.”

Rare joint statement from networks

In an unprecedented move, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC issued a joint statement saying no administration should restrict news organizations over their reporting.

“No Administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

First Amendment protects press scrutiny

The First Amendment forbids government from restricting press freedom, allowing news organizations to scrutinize those in power without fear of retaliation for their reporting.

Trump's history of press conflicts

During his first term, Trump revoked Jim Acosta's credentials, but a judge ordered reinstatement. In 2025, he tried to bar Associated Press journalists from limited-access spaces.

Pentagon restricts journalist access

The Department of Defense designated its press office a classified facility in June, barring journalists from entering. The Pentagon cited security concerns about speechwriters sharing the space.

Trump attacks female reporters

Trump has verbally lashed out at female reporters, including telling CNN's Kristen Holmes to "be quiet" and calling her a "loud, boisterous person" during an Oval Office exchange.
