Networks suspend pool coverage in solidarity

CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC suspended White House pool coverage on September twenty-first after Trump banned CNN, POLITICO and MS NOW from the grounds.

“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government.”

Why the networks took action

The five networks said no administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting. CNN's journalists had their press credentials revoked days earlier.

“No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

Trump's reason for the ban

Trump told reporters there were no specific stories that spurred the ban, but said it was cumulative stories over years. He added that they purposely write negative news.

“it's really just cumulative stories over the last few years, you get sick of it.”

Judge orders access restored

On Thursday, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against the ban, saying it likely violated the constitutional due process rights of CNN, POLITICO and MS NOW.

Networks resume coverage Friday

After the judge's order, the five networks decided to make a good faith effort to resume normal operations on Friday. CBS resumed its rotational pool duty.

White House blocks CNN from Air Force One

Later on Friday, the White House contacted the pool asking if it would replace CNN for Saturday's pool duties. The White House blocked CNN from traveling with the President on Air Force One on Saturday.

Networks decide not to replace CNN

The pool decided not to replace CNN with another TV network for Saturday's pool duties. The networks individually decided whether to cover any open press events that day.

Day-by-day decisions going forward

The TV networks are continuing pool coverage this week, but the situation is fluid. Going forward, the pool will decide whether to replace CNN depending on whether the news that day merits it.

What the White House press pool does

The White House press pool comprises journalists from multiple news organizations who accompany the President to events. Space is limited, so the pool system enables collaboration and resource sharing.

Why pool access matters

The White House Correspondents' Association calls pool duty an essential element of White House correspondent work because one never knows when the world will need information about the President.

“an essential element of the work of White House correspondents because one never knows when the world will need good information about precisely where the president of the United States is and what he is doing at any moment.”

Press role as constitutional watchdog

Georgetown Law professor Erin Carroll says the press's key role under the Constitution is to act as a watchdog. Critical reporting may feel negative but that is the press's constitutional role.

“The press's key role under the Constitution is to act as a watchdog.”

White House defends accessibility claim

A White House official called Trump the most accessible President in history, holding open press events, regular gaggles and interviews, taking questions nearly every day.

“the most accessible President in history.”

Lawsuit seeks extended access

On Monday, CNN, POLITICO and MS NOW requested the court extend their journalists' access to the White House and restore all hard passes revoked on or about September eighteenth, twenty twenty-six.

Lawyer calls ban unconstitutional

Theodore J. Boutrous Jr., representing CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO, argued the White House's effort to block his clients was a blatant violation of the First Amendment and due process.

“a blatant violation of the First Amendment and due process.”

CNN's next pool duty remains unclear

CNN is scheduled for pool duty this coming Thursday, but it remains unclear if CNN will actually be called to perform that duty. The temporary restraining order expires on October eighth.

Broader press freedom case still pending

The Associated Press filed a separate lawsuit in twenty twenty-five after its journalists were banned from the press pool. A federal appeals court paused a judge's ruling allowing AP back in.
