You don't actually need IMAX to love movies

IMAX fever is real, but the pressure to see films in the format misses what cinephilia is actually about.

In brief

IMAX fever is real, but the pressure to see films in the format misses what cinephilia is actually about. You're a real cinephile no matter what theater you choose, as long as you're actively engaging with the film. Originally reported by TIME.

IMAX had its biggest year yet

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey broke box office records after its July release, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Dune: Part Three also drawing crowds to IMAX screens throughout 2026.

But the pressure to see IMAX is misplaced

The fervor around IMAX screenings, especially the ultra-rare 70mm format available in only 26 U.S. theaters, creates unnecessary FOMO and contradicts what true cinephilia should be about.

“If I'm not seeing The Odyssey in IMAX, am I really seeing it at all?”

Screen size doesn't change the story

A 2014 study found that while larger screens feel more immersive, viewers' evaluations of the film itself weren't affected by screen size. You get the full narrative and emotional impact in a regular theater.

Filmmakers shoot for all formats

Directors frame shots with all audiences in mind, keeping anything essential to the narrative in the core ratio most people will see. Even Christopher Nolan said he doesn't mind people watching his films on iPads.

“I'm very much in favor of and in awe of the easy access that we have now to films.”

Better alternatives exist

Dolby Cinema offers enhanced color and immersive sound, while 35mm and 70mm screenings are available at many theaters. Modern projection technology is the best it's ever been.

Not everyone should see IMAX

People with sensitivities to loud noises or bright lights may find IMAX overwhelming. One viewer enjoyed The Odyssey more in regular 70mm because it felt less visually and auditorily intense.

You're a cinephile either way

It doesn't make you less of a film lover if you can't get IMAX tickets or prefer another format. As long as you're having fun and actively engaging with the work, you're doing it right.

The essence

You're a real cinephile no matter what theater you choose, as long as you're actively engaging with the film.
