Anthropic commits to Akamai deal

Anthropic will spend eleven point six billion dollars over seven years on Akamai's cloud infrastructure, Akamai announced Thursday. The commitment depends on Akamai meeting delivery and service-availability requirements.

Deal dwarfs earlier agreement

The eleven point six billion dollar commitment is more than six times the size of an one point eight billion dollar deal between the two companies that Bloomberg reported in May.

Largest in Akamai's history

The deal is the largest in Akamai's history and continues Anthropic's compute spending streak. It focuses on CPUs, general-purpose chips that handle work like running code and browsing the web.

Revenue ramps through 2028

Akamai expects one hundred fifty million to three hundred million dollars in revenue in twenty twenty-seven, starting in the second half, reaching an annual pace of about one point seven billion dollars by the end of twenty twenty-eight.

Warrant ties growth to spending

Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant for nonvoting preferred stock convertible into seven point seven million common shares at one hundred eleven dollars and thirty-three cents a share, up to about five percent of outstanding stock.

Deal could grow to $20bn

Deal could grow to $20bn

About two percent of the warrant vests when Anthropic makes its first payment. Each additional three billion dollars Anthropic commits unlocks roughly another one percent, so the deal could grow to about twenty billion dollars in total.

Akamai shares surge on news

Akamai shares rose as much as seventeen percent in after-hours trading on Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported. The warrant structure mirrors an arrangement AMD used with OpenAI last year.

The takeaway

Anthropic will pay Akamai eleven point six billion dollars over seven years for cloud infrastructure, the largest deal in Akamai's history, with potential to grow to twenty billion dollars.
