Actor goes viral for AI knowledge

Ben Affleck has gone viral this week for demonstrating his understanding of AI technology, neural networks, machine learning, and related concepts across multiple recent video interview clips.

He sold his startup to Netflix

Earlier this year, Affleck sold his AI filmmaking startup to Netflix for a reported five hundred eighty seven million dollars, establishing his credibility in the space.

Affleck explains neural networks

Affleck explains neural networks

On GQ's One More Question series, Affleck discussed how analog film moved to digital and how machine learning became part of visual effects workflows over many years.

He can write Python scripts

Affleck said he can write pretty shitty Python scripts and explained convolutional neural networks as precursors to transformers, which allow much more computation simultaneously.

“I can write, like, pretty shitty Python scripts”

Breaking down tensors and pixels

He described a tensor as the numerical translation of a visual image, including batch number, frame number, and red, green, and blue values of each pixel in each frame.

Affleck explained how neural networks identify patterns for edge detection and feature extraction, such as locating a window ledge to remove green screen images and replace them.

He visited OpenAI to learn more

Affleck admitted he used his Hollywood status to visit emerging AI technology companies including OpenAI, which ultimately led him to get directly involved in the AI space.

Creating an ethical AI dataset

To work with AI ethically and alongside artists, Affleck raised money and shot for about eight months with many cameras to create a dataset for training open models on discrete filmmaking tasks.

Fine-tuning models for cinema

At Screentime twenty twenty-six conference in Los Angeles, Affleck explained how he fine-tunes open source models by unfreezing weights and teaching them to meet cinematic standards while filmmakers retain proprietary work.

He used AI in his own film

Affleck used this technique in his movie Animals, where AI aided in the post-production process, demonstrating the practical application of his technical approach.

His real AI concerns are practical

Affleck said he worries about learned helplessness and responsible AI use, not existential threats. He does not worry about Skynet and thinks AI will be additive to filmmaking, not replace it.

“I don't worry about Skynet, and I don't think that it's going to take over the business in any meaningful way. I think it's going to be additive.”

The bottom line

Ben Affleck sold his AI filmmaking startup to Netflix for a reported $587 million and went viral this week for demonstrating technical expertise in neural networks, machine learning, and AI applications to film.
