Discord's age check begins Wednesday

Starting September 24, 2026, Discord will roll out age-verification measures to all users. The move comes after the company delayed similar plans in February due to user privacy concerns.

A vendor breach exposed user data

Last year, a third-party vendor working with Discord was breached, potentially exposing data from 70,000 users including government ID photos and selfies used for identity verification.

Most users won't need manual verification

Discord says over 90% of users won't have to verify their age manually. Instead, the platform will use account tenure, device data, and activity patterns to determine age groups without collecting new information.

“More than 90% of Discord users won't have to verify their age.”

How Discord's model works

Discord trained a machine learning model on confirmed user data to identify behavioral patterns. A typical 15-year-old's Discord usage looks different from a 30-year-old's in terms of community participation and interaction styles.

“The way a typical 15-year-old uses Discord looks different in aggregate from how a typical 30-year-old uses Discord.”

Users can appeal with alternative proof

If Discord isn't confident a user is an adult, they can appeal by sharing a credit card or age group data from their Apple App Store or Google Play Store account instead of providing ID.

Teen accounts get new restrictions

Confirmed teen accounts will be automatically blocked from age-restricted servers and channels. They'll also see message requests from non-friends in a separate inbox and get alerts when adding unfamiliar people.

Laws are forcing platforms' hands

Governments worldwide are passing age-verification requirements to protect children online. Discord faced a difficult choice: comply with local laws in Brazil and Texas or risk sanctions.

Privacy experts warn of new risks

As age-verification requirements expand, experts caution that these checks can create new privacy and security issues. The tension between protecting children and protecting user data remains unresolved.

The short version

Discord is using behavioral patterns rather than biometric scans for most users, but the rollout highlights the tension between child safety laws and privacy protection.
