CoreWeave stumbles as Musk predicts collapse

CoreWeave, a publicly traded neocloud renting computing power for AI, has hit a twelve-month stock low. Elon Musk predicts two hundred plus neoclouds will see guppy-level death and consolidation.

General Compute announced a one hundred million dollar Series A funding round led by Blackbird Ventures and Abstract Ventures, valuing the company at eight hundred million dollars post-money.

CEO dismisses collapse predictions

General Compute co-founder and CEO Finn Puklowski says fears of a chip-led collapse are massively overstated. He receives weekly requests for TPUs, GPUs and any chip to get more compute.

“massively overstated. I have people calling me up every single week asking me to do TPUs, GPUs, any chip, to get them more compute”

Specialized inference chips, not GPUs

General Compute builds its cloud from specialized inference chips made by Nvidia rivals. It struck a four hundred million dollar deal to purchase chips from SambaNova and added Positron and Cerebras to suppliers.

Large customer deal unlocks funding

Large customer deal unlocks funding

A deal with a large customer worth one hundred million dollars in annual recurring revenue paved the way for General Compute to raise its Series A funding round.

Smaller data centers, not mega-facilities

General Compute avoids building huge data centers from scratch. Instead it uses smaller power sources, rents space in other companies' data centers, and converts former bitcoin-mining sites.

Puklowski expects 75 megawatts in 2027

Puklowski expects General Compute to deploy seventy five megawatts of computing capacity in twenty twenty-seven and suspects access to two hundred megawatts of power available.

“more than we can probably fund and get hardware for”

Chipmakers back General Compute's model

Executives at SambaNova, Cerebras and Positron praised General Compute's focus on making AI cloud compute economics work. SambaNova CEO Rodrigo Liang said everyone sells speed but the real question is whether you can make money.

“Everyone in this market is selling speed. The real question is whether you can make money doing it”

Fundraising becomes full-time work

Puklowski told TechCrunch that capital raising will be a full-time job for him on both debt and equity sides as General Compute scales its operations.

“capital is going to be a full-time job for me, both on debt and equity”

At a glance

General Compute raised one hundred million dollars in Series A funding by focusing on inference chips and smaller data centers, betting against predictions of mass neocloud consolidation.
