Google launched its experimental AI app Dreambeans in India on Monday, its first market outside the U.S., available on Android and iOS with support for 13 local languages.

Languages supported in India

Dreambeans supports Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali alongside English. The launch comes less than two months after Google made the app available to all eligible U.S. users aged eighteen and older.

How Dreambeans works

Introduced in June, Dreambeans uses information from connected Google services including Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube to generate personalized illustrated stories about users' interests and everyday lives without requiring prompts.

Video animation feature added

Google recently added a feature using its Veo video-generation model to animate images in select stories, moving beyond the static AI-generated illustrations the app initially featured.

Why Google chose India

Google selected India as Dreambeans' first international market because of strong user interest and widespread use of its services.India had high overlap of users across Gemini, Gmail, and Google Photos, product manager Gozde Oznur said.

U.S. download numbers lag rivals

Dreambeans recorded nearly fifty five thousand downloads in the U.S. since June. In its first thirty days after opening to all eligible users, it recorded twenty nine thousand downloads, compared with seven point four million…

Language mixing limitation

Users can select only one language at a time for generated stories, which could limit appeal in India where many people regularly switch between languages, including Hindi and English, often mixing them in Hinglish.

Privacy controls and concerns

Dreambeans depends on information from users' Google accounts, raising questions about privacy and data access. Users can choose which Google services to connect and disconnect them at any time, Oznur said.

Handling sensitive content

Dreambeans could generate stories involving people who have died. Users can tell the app to avoid certain subjects including business-related information, and the app will try to adjust its stories accordingly.

What it means
