Google joins the AI calling race

Google is testing a new Gemini feature called Call for Me that lets the AI call businesses on your behalf, following similar moves by Meta's Muse and Instinct.

Limited rollout to Pixel subscribers

The feature will initially roll out to Pixel eleven owners who pay for a Gemini subscription in the U.S., using the beta version of Google's Phone app for Android.

What Gemini can do on calls

Gemini can share personal information you approve, handle complex tasks like checking product stock, making restaurant reservations, rescheduling appointments, and placing items on hold.

You stay in control throughout

Users can watch the call happen via live transcript and take over at any time. Gemini uses your own phone number and can navigate automated menus, wait on hold, and handle conversations.

Years of calling experiments

Google has long worked on AI-assisted calling. Years ago it demonstrated Google Assistant calling a salon to make a reservation with natural sounding umm's and ahh's.

Building on previous features

Last year Google rolled out Ask for Me, letting Gemini call businesses to inquire about pricing or services. Pixel users also have Hold for Me, Talk to a Live Rep, and Direct My Call.

Starting small to get it right

Google is launching this experiment at small scale because real-world conversations are nuanced, and the company needs time to get the feature right before rolling it out more broadly.
