Instagram launches Edits on Mac

Instagram announced Thursday it is bringing Edits, its short-form video editing app, to desktop on Mac. The desktop version is designed for more complex video-editing projects.
Direct challenge to CapCut
The move puts Edits in direct competition with ByteDance's CapCut, the video-editing app Meta sought to challenge when it launched Edits last year. CapCut has been available on desktop since twenty twenty-one.
Desktop features for creators
The desktop app includes licensed and royalty-free music, sound and video effects, automatic captions in multiple languages, full multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions, and audio waveforms for accurate cuts.
Syncing and customisation

Audio and text styles saved on the mobile app sync to the desktop app. Users can customize keyboard shortcuts, import them from other editing software, and import their own font files.
Why creators need desktop editing

Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, said creators told Instagram the same thing: a project gets too big for your phone. Your work is growing, and your tools should grow with it.
“A project gets too big for your phone. Your work is growing, and your tools should grow with it.”
Publishing and future updates
Creators can publish directly to Instagram from the desktop editor with native features like tagging and location. Instagram plans weekly updates and is working to let creators edit one project across desktop and mobile seamlessly.
The bottom line
Instagram launched Edits on Mac desktop Thursday with professional editing tools to challenge CapCut, which has dominated desktop video editing since twenty twenty-one.
