In brief
Smart circuit breakers let homeowners add EV chargers without expensive electrical panel upgrades. Noble Carbon's adaptive breakers manage power in real time, letting EV chargers fit into existing home electrical systems without costly upgrades. Originally reported by TechCrunch.
The EV charger cost problem

Many people want electric vehicles but can't afford the electrical upgrades needed to install home chargers. Upgrading electrical panels can more than double installation costs.
How Noble Carbon's breakers work

The startup developed smart circuit breakers that adjust power delivery to EV chargers in real time, allowing them to fit into electrical panels that are already at capacity.
Panels have unused capacity
Home electrical panels are designed for peak usage that happens only a handful of hours per year, like when hosting a holiday gathering. The rest of the time, there's spare capacity.
Smart load management
Noble Carbon's breakers reduce power to the three to six largest appliances when needed, preventing the entire house from exceeding the panel's capacity. This avoids the need for expensive upgrades.
“In order to avoid a main panel upgrade, you really only need control on your three to six largest loads”
The company's origin story

Co-founder and CEO Jared Lebos was inspired after experiencing rolling blackouts in South Africa. He partnered with Andrew Crane, the company's co-founder and CTO, to develop the product.
Installation and testing
The breakers fit into existing electrical panel slots and take less than five minutes to install. Employees have tested them for over a year, and the product is undergoing UL certification evaluation.
Real-world deployment
Noble Carbon is partnering with utility Eversource to install its breakers in up to 200 multifamily units in Massachusetts, bringing the technology to market.
Pittsfield startup pitching at Disrupt
Noble Carbon is one of 200 startups competing in TechCrunch Startup Battlefield at Disrupt in San Francisco in October, where 20 finalists will present on the main stage.
