Replit CEO: AI agents will reshape work, not replace it

Amjad Masad describes a future where AI handles routine tasks while humans focus on judgment and strategy.

In brief

Amjad Masad describes a future where AI handles routine tasks while humans focus on judgment and strategy. Replit CEO Amjad Masad says AI agents are transforming workplaces into self-driving companies where machines handle grunt work and humans provide judgment, changing what people do rather than eliminating jobs…

Masad's vision of work

Rebecca Bellan and Amjad Masad, CEO & co-founder, Replit, speak onstage during TechCrunch Disrupt 2026.

Replit CEO Amjad Masad told TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco on Thursday that AI will transform companies into self-driving operations where agents handle routine work and humans provide judgment and taste.

Change is already here

Masad said most jobs have changed over the past year, but many people do not yet realize this shift is coming. He warned it will be surprising to a lot of people.

“But a big part of America and the world, they still don't know that that change is coming, and it's going to be surprising to a lot of people.”

Replit's own transformation

Replit's team reflected on how AI technology changed their workplace over the past year, particularly after AI agents became more reliable earlier this year. The company entirely changed how it operates.

“Our company entirely changed how we operate, and I would say the closest analogy is a 'self-driving company'.”

Support tickets reimagined

Support tickets reimagined

When support tickets arrive at Replit, an AI agent first examines them by reviewing GitHub issues, the codebase, and Linear tickets. The human support person then receives all necessary context to decide how to proceed.

Human judgment stays central

When a support person decides to submit a patch, they click to deploy another agent. The entire loop has agents doing most work, but human judgment remains in the middle and is not going away soon.

“You have an entire loop where agents did most of the work, but crucially, there's human judgment in the middle, and we don't think that's going away anytime soon.”

Work shifts, not disappears

Instead of taking jobs from people, AI agents are changing what people work on. Replit staff now spend more time figuring out what to work on, discussing strategy, whiteboarding, and focusing on architecture and how…

“We're spending a lot more time figuring out what to work on.”

A positive vision emerges

When Replit talks with other businesses, conversations focus on how AI can help people become more productive and happier at work. AI agents make work less boring and more creative, Masad said.

Silicon Valley's missing message

Masad said there is a positive vision of the world that Silicon Valley is not really putting out, and Replit hopes to do that by showing how AI transformation can benefit workers and workplaces.

“There's a positive vision of the world that Silicon Valley is not really putting out, and we're hoping to do that.”
