In brief
The AI coding platform replaces Claude with ChatGPT, citing performance and cost, though Anthropic models remain available. Replit has made OpenAI its default AI model over Anthropic, citing better performance and cost, though users can still access Claude. Originally reported by TechCrunch.
Replit drops Anthropic as default
Replit CEO Amjad Masad announced Thursday at TechCrunch Disrupt that the AI coding platform is no longer working with Anthropic as its default model partner.
OpenAI partnership announced in August
Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, but there was never any indication it was ending its work with Anthropic until Masad's announcement.
Three reasons for the switch

Masad cited cost, partnership strength, and performance as reasons for making OpenAI the default. He said ChatGPT is better now based on internal benchmarks.
“I think ChatGPT is better now”
Performance metrics favour OpenAI
Replit's internal benchmark shows Sol and Astra perform better on building vibe-coded applications from scratch than Anthropic's models.
Anthropic models still available
After Disrupt, Masad clarified that customers can still access Anthropic models on the platform, but OpenAI's ChatGPT is now the default option.
Default shift cuts Anthropic spend

This shift could significantly reduce Replit's spending with Anthropic since most customers stick with the default rather than selecting a model themselves.
Replit was top-five Anthropic customer
Prior to the OpenAI deal, Replit relied on Anthropic's Claude models and was until recently a top-five customer of Anthropic's, Masad noted.
Enterprise revenue growing fast
Masad said enterprise was two percent of revenue last year but is now fifteen percent. More than fifty percent of Replit's revenue is B two B.
Enterprise to dominate in twenty twenty-seven
Backstage at Disrupt, Masad told TechCrunch he expects more than half of Replit's revenue to come from enterprise and government customers in twenty twenty-seven.
The bottom line
Replit has made OpenAI its default AI model over Anthropic, citing better performance and cost, though users can still access Claude.
