Spotify lets you edit your own recommendation algorithm

In brief

Spotify's new Taste Profile feature gives US Premium subscribers direct control over how the platform understands and recommends their music. Spotify opens its algorithm to users

Spotify is rolling out Taste Profile to US Premium subscribers, letting them see how the platform understands their music taste and request changes using natural language commands.

What Taste Profile actually does

The feature reveals Spotify's algorithmic understanding of your taste across music, podcasts, and audiobooks. You can ask for more variety, request specific genres or artists, or adjust the overall vibe of recommendations.

Why this matters for listeners

Spotify's recommendations don't always match how tastes evolve. Users often get too-similar suggestions or unwanted recommendations from music they stream but don't want to hear more of, like sleep sounds or kids' music.

How to use Taste Profile

How to use Taste Profile

Open your profile picture on the mobile app, scroll to Taste Profile, and describe what you want to adjust under Tell us more. Within a few hours, your Home feed will show different recommendations.

From beta to biggest market

Spotify co-CEO Gustav Söderström unveiled Taste Profile in March at South by Southwest in Austin. It was initially available only in New Zealand before arriving in the US, Spotify's largest market by traffic and revenue.

The algorithm that built Spotify

Spotify's recommendation engine powers Discover Weekly, Made for You playlists, and Spotify Wrapped. Taste Profile essentially gives listeners the keys to understand and edit how this core feature works.

“In some ways, Taste Profile essentially gives you the keys to Spotify's algorithm.”

Still in beta, wider rollout coming

Taste Profile is available now to US Premium subscribers aged 18 and up, but remains in beta. Spotify hasn't announced when the feature will expand to other markets or subscriber tiers.

The key point

Users can now see exactly how Spotify's algorithm categorizes their taste and request changes using natural language, rather than being stuck with recommendations that don't match their evolving preferences.
