Tesla postpones Roadster event

Tesla is delaying the reveal of its redesigned second-generation Roadster from October 1 to October 15 in Waco, Texas due to severe weather forecasts.

Why the event must be outdoors

Tesla has been integrating cold gas thrusters from SpaceX into the Roadster to make it fly in some capacity, which requires the event to be held outdoors.

A long history of delays

The Roadster reveal has been delayed many times. Elon Musk once planned to hold the event on April Fools' Day this year, saying it would offer him some deniability if it got delayed again.

The original 2017 concept

Tesla first showed off the second-generation Roadster concept in 2017 at an event where it debuted the Semi. The company promised it was just a few years away.

Customer deposits and pricing

Tesla collected fifty thousand dollar deposits from prospective customers. The Roadster had an estimated base price of around two hundred thousand dollars, with some paying two hundred fifty thousand dollars for one of one thousand Founders Series versions.

Criticism from industry figures

Last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on X that seven point five years had felt like a long time to wait for his own new Roadster, though Musk claimed Altman had gotten a refund.

Musk has said he expects it to take a year or more before the new Roadster goes into production after it is finally revealed, leaving the ship date up in the air.
