Tesla ends Cybertruck production

Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck in 2027, CEO Elon Musk announced on X. The company will use the factory space to build two-seater Cybercab robotaxis instead.
Cybertruck sales fell short
When Musk handed over the first Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands total over three years.
Musk's original vision
First announced in 2019, the Cybertruck was Musk's personal favourite. He promised it would be radical, inspired by cyberpunk sci-fi designs like Blade Runner.
“Probably my personal favorite for the next product is the pickup truck, and we are going to just do an amazing pickup truck.”
Promises versus reality

At the 2019 reveal, Tesla said the Cybertruck would start under forty thousand dollars with up to five hundred miles of range.
Market struggles and controversy
The polarizing design did not sit well with buyers at the higher price. During 2024, Musk became a major financial backer of Donald Trump, turning the recognizable Cybertruck into a target for protesters.
Robotaxi expansion plans
Tesla has spent the last two months putting Cybercabs on the streets in Austin, Texas. With no major incidents to date, the company plans to expand to Dallas later this month.
Part of broader strategy shift
This is the third product Tesla has discontinued to fuel robotics ambitions. Earlier this year, the company ended production of the Model S sedan and Model X SUV to make Optimus humanoid robots instead.
