Tesla's Roadster reveal finally gets a date

Nine years after the first reveal, Tesla says the new Roadster shows up on October 1, thrusters and all.

In brief

Nine years after the first reveal, Tesla says the new Roadster shows up on October 1, thrusters and all. A reveal is not a car. Even Musk says production is still 12 to 18 months past the October 1 event. Originally reported by TechCrunch.

Go for launch

Tesla second generation roadster

Tesla posted a graphic on X reading "10.01" with two words attached. October 1 is when the second generation Roadster gets shown to the public.

“Go for launch”

The car that flies, sort of

The teaser graphic hints at the cold gas thrusters SpaceX developed for the car. They are optional, and they are meant to let the Roadster leave the ground in some fashion.

Announced in 2017

Tesla first revealed this sports car in November 2017 and has delayed it repeatedly since. The October date is the latest in a long line of promised moments.

Sam Altman wants his car

Altman paid a $50,000 reservation fee and complained publicly last year about the wait. Musk shot back that Altman had already taken a refund.

“7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait”

The 2017 design is gone

The Information reported that Tesla scrapped the original car entirely. What shows up on October 1 is a new design nobody outside the company has seen.

Then wait another year

Musk has already said production starts 12 to 18 months after the reveal. Anyone holding a reservation is looking at 2027 at the earliest.

The one thing

A reveal is not a car. Even Musk says production is still 12 to 18 months past the October 1 event.
