ArenaNet rethinks the MMO interface

Guild Wars 3 will have significantly less UI than typical MMORPGs like World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy fourteen, studio head Colin Johanson announced at Gamescom.

Why the minimal HUD design

The game is designed for console as a lean-back experience where players cannot hover over icons to read details, so ArenaNet intentionally reduced UI clutter.

Combat shown, not listed

Instead of UI icons showing debuffs, combat conditions like cold attacks will be represented visually on enemies, letting players watch the action instead of staring at the screen's bottom.

The cold stacking system

The cold stacking system

Multiple players can stack cold on enemies, causing their animations to slow visibly and eventually freeze them solid. All happens in the world, not in a UI box.

“if you get enough cold stacked on an enemy, depending on its size, it'll freeze into a solid block of ice”

Better for all players

Johanson said testing shows players now watch actual combat instead of the UI. The controller constraint also pushed ArenaNet to create a better experience for mouse and keyboard players too.

“people's eyes are now watching the actual combat that's happening on the screen instead of just staring at the UI the whole time”

Beta coming in fall twenty twenty-seven

Guild Wars 3 is in active development with a beta period scheduled for fall twenty twenty-seven.

The one thing

Guild Wars 3 will have significantly less UI than typical MMOs, using visual effects instead of icons to communicate combat status, partly because the game is designed for console.
