Samsung and OnePlus launch clip-on earbuds as market gets crowded

Two new clip-on earbud models arrive as the market becomes oversaturated with similar options that lack meaningful variety.

In brief

Two new clip-on earbud models arrive as the market becomes oversaturated with similar options that lack meaningful variety. Samsung Galaxy Buds On and OnePlus Buds Clip launch as clip-on earbuds flood the market with largely identical products, making it harder for buyers to choose. Originally reported by TechRadar.

Samsung Galaxy Buds On go on sale Tuesday 27th October in Korea. These are Samsung's debut open-ears, with global availability expected soon after European listings appeared online.

OnePlus reveals clip-on buds with dual drivers

OnePlus Buds Clip feature dual drivers, sound leakage prevention, above-average battery life and automatic left-right detection so either bud works on either ear.

OnePlus buds unavailable in US and UK

OnePlus retreated from the US and UK earlier this year. The Buds Clip will sell in Asia, Europe and several other regions, but not in those two markets.

Open earbuds market is absolutely saturated

Most brands now have multiple clip-on options. Bose, Shokz, Soundcore, Soundpeats, Baseus and Earfun all offer multiple models competing in the same space.

Why open earbuds are so popular

According to sales figures, open earbuds are massive right now. They're comfortable, don't block the world, have great battery lives thanks to lack of ANC, cost less than in-ear buds and sound good.

The problem: they all feel the same

Open earbuds lack the scope for variety that in-ear buds offer. Ninety-nine percent of pairs tested feel largely the same: they fit the same, sound the same and work the same.

“99% of the pairs I test feel largely the same. They fit the same, sound the same and work the same.”

Buyers struggle to choose amid the deluge

Buyers struggle to choose amid the deluge

The market saturation makes it harder for new buyers to know which pair to pick. Many people are put off by the deluge, and new options arrive before buyers can trust their choice.

Buy from a trusted brand at your price point

With so many similar options, the advice is to cut out the noise and buy from a brand you trust at a price that fits your budget rather than chase the latest release.

“Cut out the noise and just buy from a brand you trust at a price that fits your budget.”
