The Rangers prospect nobody's watching yet

Yolfran Castillo stole 55 bases in Class-A and led his league, and Texas has nobody in the majors who can do that.

In brief

Yolfran Castillo stole 55 bases in Class-A and led his league, and Texas has nobody in the majors who can do that. Castillo is a 19-year-old shortstop who gets on base at a .390 clip and runs, and he's roughly two years from Arlington. Originally reported by Texas Rangers On SI.

Teams scout high school, college and international players because the next star can turn up anywhere. The cheap international signing sometimes beats the first-round pick.

Meet Yolfran Castillo

Meet Yolfran Castillo

He's the Rangers' No. 5 prospect, playing at Class-A Hickory where casual fans never look. Nineteen years old, out of Venezuela.

“This guy is coming almost as fast as he can get around the bases.”

Defender of the month, twice

Texas named him their defender of the month for August, his second time winning it this year. He's building a reputation as one of the system's best gloves.

A flawless August

He handled all 82 defensive chances cleanly, mostly at shortstop, with 51 assists and 11 double plays in the month.

The bat showed up too

His first full season ended at .288/.390/.416 with eight homers, 58 RBI, 26 doubles and four triples. Second-most hits in the Carolina League.

Fifty-five steals

He led the Carolina League in stolen bases, caught just 10 times. That number is what pulls scouts' eyes off the spreadsheet.

The math behind .390

130 hits plus 70 walks put him on base 200 times, and he stole a base on more than a quarter of them. The on-base number is earned, not lucky.

“He didn't get that .390 on-base percentage by accident.”

Nobody in Texas does this

Evan Carter leads the big league club with 16 steals. The Rangers roster has no one who can run the way Castillo runs.

“Texas has no one on their roster that can do what Castillo can do.”

Two more years, maybe

He's not close to a call-up. High-A Hub City is the floor for next season, a multi-affiliate jump is possible, and an aggressive path puts him in the majors by late 2028.

“He can't hide in plain sight anymore.”

Here's the gist

Castillo is a 19-year-old shortstop who gets on base at a .390 clip and runs, and he's roughly two years from Arlington.
