Police chief resigns after investigation

Marc Yamada stepped down as Montgomery County Police Chief on Friday following a critical report from the county's Office of the Inspector General.

Failed to record five days of leave

Between July 2024 and July 2026, Yamada didn't record leave for at least five days when he was absent and unavailable for work, allowing him to continue building his sick leave balance.

Drank alcohol while on the clock

Yamada attended a golf tournament and consumed alcohol on one of the days he failed to take leave, violating county regulations against drinking while on duty.

Lied about selecting a relative

Yamada falsely told investigators he didn't choose his relative, another county employee, to accompany him to an out-of-state conference in June. The investigation proved this was false.

“Our investigation revealed this to be false.”

County executive demanded his resignation

Marc Elrich said he asked Yamada to resign based on the report's findings, citing concerns about the chief's truthfulness and integrity in leading the police department.

“Trust and integrity are fundamental to public service, particularly for those entrusted with leading our police department.”

Acting chief takes over operations

Assistant Police Chief Darren Francke will serve as acting chief until a permanent replacement is appointed to lead the Montgomery County Police Department.

37-year veteran of the force

Yamada had served the Montgomery County Police Department for more than 37 years, including work on the D.C. sniper task force in 2002, before being sworn in as chief in July 2024.

The essence

Yamada resigned after an internal investigation found he didn't properly report absences, drank at a work event, and lied to investigators about selecting a relative for a conference trip.
