Law enforcement sources told The Banner the shooting is connected to an ongoing gang dispute in the area. Police Commissioner Richard Worley called it a cowardly act and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of North Caroline and East Fayette streets, adjacent to Douglass Homes, a public housing complex built in the 1940s. The area also has a small park, liquor store, and bus stops.
