What AI cannot do, and why it matters
Educators must teach students to recognize AI's limits in creativity, empathy, and authentic expression.
In brief
Educators must teach students to recognize AI's limits in creativity, empathy, and authentic expression. AI lacks lived experience and embodied understanding, making it fundamentally incapable of genuine empathy, imagination, and the emotional depth that drives human creativity and connection. AI is here to stay
We can't ignore artificial intelligence or wish it away. The real question is how we prepare students to understand what's at stake if we depend on it too heavily.
The conformity trap
If students rely too heavily on AI, we risk intellectual conformism and the erosion of critical thinking. Researchers are already documenting these effects.
Pattern matching isn't thinking

The key distinction: AI excels at recognizing patterns in data, but it cannot daydream, imagine, or express itself authentically. These are uniquely human capacities.
Testing AI on literature
In a Southern Gothic literature course, students asked AI to analyze the emotional atmosphere of a heartbreaking scene from Carson McCullers' 1940 novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.
AI's sterile response

ChatGPT described the scene using cold, abstract language and even made a factual error, missing the profound sadness and moral complexity that gives the moment its power.
“The atmosphere is devastatingly lonely and seems suspended in time.”
Lacking lived experience
AI functions as a pattern-optimization engine, synthesizing data without the embodied understanding needed to grasp context. Its analyses were systematically superficial and filled with vague clichés.
The deaf character problem

When asked to write a new scene, AI made a deaf character speak extensively, revealing it cannot understand the lived experience of deafness or any embodied human condition.
No body, no empathy
AI lacks a physical form to experience the world. Without embodied presence, it cannot truly put itself in someone else's shoes or experience anything approaching human empathy.
Emotion is the counterweight
Empathy, emotion, and irrationality are the heart of literature and art. These human qualities are sources of creativity and connection that AI fundamentally cannot replicate.
Banning AI isn't realistic

Prohibiting AI use is impractical and counterproductive. Many people need these tools. The real goal is helping students understand what they sacrifice when they outsource their thinking.
Embrace human vulnerability
The best art emerges from moments of vulnerability, confusion, and disorientation. Students should accept their human fragility rather than hide it behind a chatbot.
“The spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.”
The headline
AI lacks lived experience and embodied understanding, making it fundamentally incapable of genuine empathy, imagination, and the emotional depth that drives human creativity and connection.
