Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said on Monday the US central bank should move 'relatively quickly' to a restrictive monetary policy stance to control inflation she feels has become more broad-based.
“I see inflation pressures as relatively broad-based rather than concentrated in one component.”
Inflation Pressures Broad-Based
Hammack noted energy prices rising for oil, retail gasoline, and diesel but emphasized inflation is not solely driven by energy costs.
“Energy has been making headlines this year, with prices rising for oil, retail gasoline, and diesel, but it isn't the whole story.”
AI Buildout Raises Costs
Hammack highlighted demand-side pressures from AI buildout increasing prices on computer, electronic, and high-tech components.
“Demand-side pressures coming from the AI buildout are raising prices on key computer, electronic, and high-tech components.”
Restrictive Policy for Inflation Control
Hammack stated a restrictive monetary policy stance is appropriate to ensure a timely return to 2% inflation and should be implemented relatively quickly.
“A restrictive monetary policy stance is appropriate to ensure a timely return to 2% inflation.”
Current Inflation Forecast
Hammack's staff research indicates underlying inflation is in the mid-to-high 2% range, with a timeline for returning to 2% inflation.
“She said research by her staff puts underlying inflation currently in the mid-to-high 2% range.”
Fed Policy Committee Role
Hammack, a voting member of the Fed's policy committee, has been among the more hawkish voices and dissented in favor of raising rates at the July meeting.

Transparency and Forward Guidance
Hammack stressed the importance of explaining policy decisions to ensure households and firms can make better-informed decisions.
“I have a responsibility to the public to explain why I make the decisions I make. Transparency has the benefit of allowing consumers, businesses, and financial markets to make better-informed decisions.”
The one thing
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack says the Fed should move quickly to restrictive monetary policy to control broad-based inflation and AI-related cost pressures.
